DAVID LYNCH.
THE ART OF THE REAL

Welcome to Lynchconference, the website of the 2012 Berlin conference on the artistic work of David Lynch. The interdisciplinary international conference David Lynch: The Art of the Real was held in June 2012 at the Roter Salon of the Volksbuehne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz theatre in Berlin. It was organized by University of Arts Braunschweig, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, University of the Arts Berlin and Humboldt-University Berlin. The organizers wish to acknowledge the generous support of Fritz Thyssen Stiftung für Wissenschaftsförderung for the holding of the conference and the preparation of this publication.

The conference was the first to deal with David Lynch’s oeuvre in an interdisciplinary and comprehensive manner. While the focus was on both the feature and short films of David Lynch, the conference also covered aspects of all of his other artistic work, including his paintings, sculptures, cartoons, the advertisements he produced and the musical score and soundscape he produced with his long-time collaborator Angelo Badalamenti.

The speakers at the conference came from a variety of disciplines, including film studies, psychoanalysis, philosophy, art history, sociology and cultural studies. The conference’s unique approach to Lynch sought to situate and discuss his work within a decidedly political context.

Against this background, the publication of the conference papers is not to be taken as a conclusive statement on Lynch’s oeuvre. Rather we would hope that it encourages further interdisciplinary research.
